Exciting to be working on an ecological engineering project in collaboration with Sarina Ergas investigating how to optimize treatment wetlands for landfill leachate. MS student Lilly Mulligan will be developing a process model of the system. Check out the project website here.
PhD student Osama gets the Everglades Foundation Fellowship!
Congratulations to Osama Tarabih who was awarded the 2019 ForEverglades Fellowship! this prestigious award would allow Osama to continue his work with optimization of Lake Okeechobee’s releases into the Caloosahatchee River, St. Lucie River, and the Everglades to mutually benefit the environment and society. Way to go Osama!

Michelle passed her PhD proposal defense!
Congratulations to Michelle Platz on successfully impressing all her committee members during her proposal defense. Michelle’s dissertation working title is Characterization of net community metabolism among restored coral communities in the Florida Keys.
New project funded by the Bureau of Reclamation!
Our project “Effective energy recovery in desalination and water reclamation utilities through pressure-retarded osmosis (PRO)” was one of the 30 selected for funding through the Desalination and Water Purification Research Program. Fun times to come for PhD candidate Josh on building and experimenting with a bench-scale PRO system!

End of Spring Accomplishments
It was a good end of the academic year for our group. First, Josh Benjamin was accepted to PhD candidancy after defending his proposal “Desalination Energy Recovery through Pressure Retarded Osmosis: A Techno-Economic Assessment”. Second, undergrad researcher Carlee Chaffin won the CEE Department’s Outstanding Graduation Award during the Induction of the Engineer Ceremony. Congrats to both Josh and Carlee!!
Charlotte awarded PhD Fellowhip!
Charlotte was just awarded the USF Signature Fellowship for the remaining two years of her PhD. Way to go Charlotte!

Charlotte accepted to PhD Candidancy
Congratulations to Charlotte Haberstroh for successfully defending her PhD proposal "Plastic Pollution in Coastal Urban Rivers: Spatial and Temporal Patterns of Plastic Release and Transport". Soon after her defense, Charlotte also accepted the Florida Stormwater Association Scholarship (https://www.florida-stormwater.org/scholarship), and presented her research at AUG in Washington DC. Way to wrap up the year!
